Went out Sunday night around 7:00 pm down to the Trenton Channel.  Caught several silver bass and a small muskie.  Didn't get my first walleye until 8:15 (#7 Blue & Silver, 5 foot lead).  Picked up two other walleyes, one on a #9 Clown and a #11 Orange and Gold Rapala.  Hung up a weight and my shank broke shortly after the 3rd fish.  Got all my lures back but it was a tangled mess so I just headed in.

I did notice that as I was bringing in the 3rd walleye he was followed up by another walleye.

Heading out again Wednesday night and probably Friday night, will post how I do.

Was out Handlining friday 4/25/08 about 9pm caught 2, in 12 foot of water, lost one at the boat. Also went out Sunday afternoon 4/27/08 with my uncle Les. He caught 1 and I got 1, both in 40 foot of water. Blue/silver, and orange/siver rapalas

Went out last night with Jerry Hinton and Mike Pasik.  Jerry drove the boat while Mike and I fished.  We picked up 6 with 5 of them coming on a #11 Orange and Gold Rapala and 1 on a Flyin' Tiger spoon.  Cold out there in the channel last night.

Went out last night and picked up 3 more for about 2 hours of fishing.  No consistent pattern, caught them on every lead and 3 different lures.

Purple/Chrome pencil plug

#11 Orange/Gold

#9 Clown

Water temp was 52 degrees.  Only caught a couple of silvers.

Went out last night with our esteemed President Dan B.  We started at the BASF wall jigging and caught a bunch of Silver Bass.  From there we went over to Fighting Island and picked up one walleye and a bunch of White Perch.  Around 9 I said enough of this screwing around, time to get serious so we switched over to handlining over in the west Mud Island channel.  We caught more Silver Bass and 3 walleyes in about 45 minutes.  We quit around 10:00 pm (That getting up in the morning for work thing is a pain).

Dan caught his on a #9 Clown.  That's right, Dan the devoted bass fisherman caught a walleye handlining.  At first he thought it was another Silver bass.  Next thing I know I hear an "Oh Crap" and a walleye is hitting the deck.  He sure is a jumpy little guy, every time he hooked a fish I thought he was going to jerk the whole rig right out of the water.  Must be that bass fishing hook set mentality.

Mine came on #11 Orange/Gold Rapala.

Went out last night north of the Grosse Isle free bridge by the #13 bouy and picked up 3 walleyes.  Got all of them on a red/white Stubbie.  Few other boats pulling wire and we were all covering a lot of water trying to find the fish.  It was a Sllllllooooooowwwwwwww night!  Oh yea.....one other thing, the Silvers are still there.

Went out last night with DWF member  Mark Bye and went 5 for 7 down river. Started in front of the Harrison Ramp and fished up to McClouth Steel. Caught the fish on Orange/Gold, Clown, Purple/Silver Thunderstick, and a custom Rap (DT-158). Silver Bass are still around but not in the same numbers from a week ago.  Wind died down after dark and it was absolutely perfect out.

Sorry about this late report, fished on Sunday- 15th, handlining, caught 1 at the BASF wall. Fished the mill in Ecorse, north of Fighting Island & the salt mines with no luck. Saw a few guys getting them drifting bb with crawlers. Still catching the silvers & caught a 6-7 lb sheephead, what a fight!

Went out into the channel last night with my friend Dean after the storm passed.  Went 5 for 7 on Flying Tiger and Rainbow Trout Spoons.  Fished between the Stacks and the Catamaran.  Started around 7:30 pm and quit around 10:00 pm.  Also caught the blackest Smallmouth I have ever seen, about a 3 pounder.

West side of Grosse Isle about 1/4 mile down from the free bridge and almost straight across from the Edison discharge.  Can't miss it, it's up on a lift and been sitting there for years.

I was just there last night and asked him about that spoon.  He was busy cleaning fish and he gave me the "It's over there" wave.  Figured I would catch him later at a better time.  Thanks for the description Mark.

Went out last night with Mark Bye in his boat.  We went 8 for 10 last night with most of the fish coming from an area about 150 yards SE of the stacks.  Fish were caught on a variety of different colored spoons.  Lucky's GSC, Clown, Perch and  a black spoon with multi-color reflective tape on it.

Mark - I looked for you last night but did not see your boat. Caught some nice walleye (one man limit with a couple 4 lbers) last night toward the middle of the channel south of the stacks. Most came on Sparky's GSC spoon. Which boat where you in?

You mean you couldn't see that shiny reel of mine out there ??

I was in a 16' green Polar Kraft, I was sitting on the left side.  That's about where we were picking them up as well.

I was out last night too, saw the Polar Kraft.  I caught three and all were on the east side of the channel south of the catamaran.  All three were on Flyin' Tiger on the 5' kicker.  Caught a few rock bass and something I thought was a walleye but ended up being a bunch of fire line and a mess of weeds.  Seems like I couldn't get anything going after 9pm, switched to raps and had no luck with them, left around 10pm.  Had to spend a lot of time clearning my lines of weeds :X

Lucky's GSC:  Oh for god sake, I have one of those, along with one of almost all of those spoons in the picture.

Decided to go give the channel another try last night.

Started off down by the Catamaran and I lost one and picked up a dink Smallie.  Around 8:00 pm I headed up to McClouth where I caught 2 in about 27 feet of water.  One came on # 9 Clown the other on a #9 Blue Holographic.  Around 9:30 pm I headed down below the #14 buoy where I caught one more on a #9 DT Killer Shad and lost another on the #9 Blue Holographic.  Both fish came on the right side of the channel as I was making my turn west toward the ramp.

Water was very clean and floating weeds were almost non-existent.  No junk fish !!

Tonight was one of those nights when I should have just stayed home.

Went down to Lizzy Park to go handlining for a bit.  No one was at the ramp so I didn't have to pay to launch.  My luck ended right there.  Went up by the Harrison ramp and the weeds were terrible.  After several attempts I finally got my lures down weed free only to catch 4 smallies and 2 rock bass before I ever hooked a walleye.  Unfortunately he and the 3 pounds of weeds he was dragging came off at the side of the boat.  I did manage to get 2 in the boat but after a couple of hours of fighting with the weeds and swallowing bugs I gave up.

Went to the car and I found out that my right trailer light housing was completely smashed.  If that wasn't bad enough my trailer plate was gone as well.  Looks like I'm making a trip to the Sec. of State sometime in the near future.

Oh Joy !!!!

ps...both fish came on a #7 Hot Steel just between the 13 & 14 Bouy's.

Sorry to hear about the bad luck with the trailer, sounds like an easy fix though, just the time wasted at the suck-retary of state.

Getting two and having a third on sounds a heck of a lot better than the other reports I have herad for the Trenton Channel, way to go.

Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.  In and out in less than 2 minutes and it only cost 5 bucks for a replacement plate.

I went out Saturday afternoon (11/22).....nothing.

One of my kids school teachers wanted to learn about handlining so we gave it a shot for a few hours. Water was dirty, temps around 38 outside the discharge and up to 48 in the discharge. One boat trolling raps got one and I talked to another person jigging and he had nothing.

Water out of LEMP was low, 1.5 feet and no bouys.

Well I gave it a shot Sunday, more of a shakedown cruise for the boat than anything else. Launched at LEMP around 8:00 am. All the docks are in the water and one is a little too far in the water. Ran through the canals and out by Humbug. Once I got out on the river there was ice everywhere. I took it easy until I got up to Edison and trolled around there for a few hours. Around 11:00 am all the ice disappeared. Surface temps were around 36 degrees, water was dirty with lots of debris and a few dead ducks. Tried on the West side of Calf for a little bit and in front of Humbug. No fish. Off next week so I’ll try again then.

Feels good to be writing a handlining report with positive results.

Went out handlining 4/17 down in the channel. Didn't get my first fish until 9:30 pm and got the last one around 11:00 pm. Ended up with 3 and lost one, all males. Caught them on DT-158 and DT Rainbow Trout in size #11.

Took my kids teacher out handlining tonight for a do-over from a trip back in November. He got his first one and his first limit tonight. We ended up with ten, all west of the Catamaran. 7 of the fish came on a #11 Firetiger and 3 on a #7 Chartreuse Rap. I also lost 5 fish otherwise we would have been done in under an hour. Water was a little dirty and 46.5 degrees. Awesome night !!!!

Got an invite from Jerry Hinton to go pull some wire tonight with he and Greg Warsow.  Jerry pretty much drove the boat and let Greg and I fish.  We ended up with 10 and lost 2 all around the catamaran.  Hot lure tonight was a #9 Orange/Gold Rapala.  Water was dirty but the fish were cooperating.  Even the silvers left us alone once it got dark.  Jerry was even nice enough to let me dirty up his fish cleaning table instead of mine.  What a Guy !!!

Hope it continues like this for May 8th, should be some nice baskets of fish brought in.

What length leaders should I use first starting out trying to pull wire?

Here......this should take care of it.

As for leader lengths I would start off with a 20 foot leader 20 inches up from the weight.  Once you get comfortable with that then you can add more leaders.

I run 3 leaders.......40/20/6.

Mark,

I am using 25 LB Mason Line on my leaders.   Do you use any snaps or swivels to attach the line to the lures you are running?   If not, is the line tight against the lure or a small loop?

Does it make a difference on the type of weights used?   I mean, 1 1/2 , 2 lb etc?

I will be attending your worksop with new questions.

Thanks

I use a snap swivel on the end of the leader that attaches to the shank and just a snap on the end that attaches to the lure.  I use a 1 1/4 pound weight down in the channel.

Went out handlining 5/18/09 after the meeting and picked up 4 in about an hour.  Fished from the 13/14 bouys to McClouth Steel.  #9 Firetiger and #9 Blue/Silver on the 20 and 6 foot leads did the trick.  Only caught a handful of silvers.  Water temp 56 degrees.

Dad came down to visit so we gave it a shot last night (5/21) in the same area but with different results.  Silvers never shut down after dark, well sort of.  Instead of getting doubles and triples while the sun was out we only caught one at a time after dark.  Only managed 3 walleyes, two of which I released because they were too small.  They were both around 15 inches but very skinny.  #11 Firetiger and #9 Clown.  Water temp 58 degrees.

May give Amherstburg a shot bright and early Monday morning.

Took my daughter Alex out handlining this morning over in the Amherstburg Channel.  We picked up two, lost one and released two others at the Hole-in-the-Wall.

We drifted down to the C.C.G. where we picked up one more.

Lots of Silver Bass, water was 62 degrees, a little stained with a few weeds floating down.  We fished from 7:30 am to 10:00 am.  Four of the walleyes came on a black spoon and the other on a #9 Blue Mackeral Rapala.

Went back over to Amherstburg this morning to pull some wire.  Started out at the Hole-in-the-Wall where I picked up two.  Moved upstream and started fishing at the 74 bouy in 30 to 34 feet of water.  By the time I passed the 76 bouy I picked up the rest of my limit and threw back 7 more for a total of 13 walleyes.  Most were just over 15 inches and 4 in the 11 to 14 inch range.  Largest fish was 20 inches long.  First two fish came on a Riley Special spoon.  The other 11 all came on a #254 "Corn" Denny Spoon on the 20 foot lead.  Best part of the whole morning was only 5 Silver Bass.  Fished from 7:00 am to 10:30 am. and surface temp was 68 degrees.

Went back over to the Amherstburg Channel Saturday (6/27), picked up another limit and released seven.  One fish was 17 inches long, the other 12 were all 15 inch "cookie cutter" walleyes.  Water temp was 71 degrees and clear except for the weeds.  One minute the river would be clear and before you knew it you would need a bush hog to get through all the weeds and mayfly casings.  The spoons in the picture caught all the fish the last two trips with the one on the left catching the majority of them.

Yes it is CDN waters.  Here is the link to the OMNR Web Site for license fees.  You cannot order one on-line yet.  You have to drive over or order it by phone.

Mark,

How many leaders can one run while pulling wire in Canada?  Have you been stopped in Canadian waters for an inspection of your boat?

Went back over there this morning and picked up another limit and threw back 4. All the fish were between 14.5 and 16 inches. Weeds were bad, I would get a couple of minutes of clear water and then it was "Welcome to the Jungle" for the next 5. Flying Tiger and Purple watermelon caught the fish. I was also checked by the OMNR for their survey. I answered all their questions and then they left. I think she was just checking me out, she never marked down any of my replies on her clipboard. I also saw a woman in her late 20's early 30's handlining. About 9:30 am she stood up, took of her clothes and went back to pulling wire in her bikini......LIFE IS GOOD !!!

No Bro!! That's called "Heat Stroke"!!!! It was really a 350 guy with big boobs. And glad you caught some fish. The gobies are in there thick and I think that's the forage base for these wallies. And I have been checked by those 2 in a light blue center console every time I've been there. 4 times now??? Nice gig, getting paid to ride around and get sun.

Right in the channel in about 34 feet of water.  I did pick up one on the shelf in about 22 fow, but all the rest have come in deep water.  Last Sunday I was just north and to the right of the red/white lighthouse marking the Livingston Channel.

Last question :) within that channel aren't the freighters with their wakes a problem for a smaller boat?

With todays economy, it's amazing how little shipping is going on this summer. No steel mills working, no auto plants running!! In five trips out in the last 2 weeks, I bet I haven't seen 4 ships?????

Mark,

Fished Amherstberg the other day.  Marked lots of fish but no takers.   Using a 2 lb weight with a 20 foot leader.   Maybe speed was the issue.   Hope to try again and not one freighter.  That really surprised us.

I'm running a 1 1/2 lb weight and yes speed can be an issue there.  The current is faster so you sometimes have to kick it up a notch to stay ahead of the current.  I was going to head out this morning but the rain prevented that.  I'll try again tomorrow.

Thanks Mark, I would appreciate that very much.   My motor is in the shop but should be back next week.  Nothing like practical experience.  By the way, my wifes niece is a life long friend with Sue.  Thanks again.

Yea Sue mentioned that to me.  Kind of slow there today.  Only managed 4 and one 36" Muskie.

Went back over to Amherstburg this morning.  Picked up one by the 76 bouy in 22 feet of water.  Moved down to the Hole-in-the-Wall and picked up 4 in 28 feet of water in front of the pink house.  Moved down to the C.C.G. and picked up my final fish in 26 feet of water just ahead of the 60 Bouy.  Each spoon caught 2 fish and the 19 inchers came on Flying Tiger.  One of the 19 inch fish had a 6 inch goby in her belly.  Water was a little dirty, 68 degrees and weeds weren't much of an issue at all.  I also caught a pair of 30 inch muskie's in 24 feet of water up by the 76 bouy.  Those things are starting to be a nuisance.  Started at 7:15 am and quit at 10:20 am.

Went 8 for 8 on the Bows and Eyes today handlining in the Trenton Channel.  All of the 15 inch Bow's were caught just ahead of the discharge channel.  I released all but one that was hooked pretty bad.  The eyes were caught west of the Catamaran, 3 on the 40' lead (Corn) and one on the 20' lead (Chartreuse Watermelon).  I also picked up about 7 Smallies ranging from 8 to 15 inches.  Lucky's GSC, Chartreuse Watermelon and a "Corn" Denny Spoon picked up all the fish.  Around 11:00 am I went over to Powderhouse Island and caught about a dozen perch of which I only kept 3, 9 to 10 inchers.  Water was clear, a few floating weeds and 67 degrees.

My Dad and I went out handlining this morning for a little bit.  We picked up 3 including these two pigs.  All the fish were caught in front of Humbug.  Water is clearing up.  His was 28 inches and mine was just under 26.
