Mark,
What length leaders should I use first starting out trying to pull wire?

Here......this should take care of it.

As for leader lengths I would start off with a 20 foot leader 20 inches up from the weight. Once you get comfortable with that then you can add more leaders.
I run 3 leaders.......40/20/6.

Mark,
I am using 25 LB Mason Line on my leaders. Do you use any snaps or swivels to attach the line to the lures you are running? If not, is the line tight against the lure or a small loop?
Does it make a difference on the type of weights used? I mean, 1 1/2 , 2 lb etc?
I will be attending your worksop with new questions.
Thanks
carl

| I use a snap swivel on the end of the leader that attaches to the shank and just a snap on the end that attaches to the lure. I use a 1 1/4 pound weight down in the channel.

Went out handlining 5/18/09 after the meeting and picked up 4 in about an hour. Fished from the 13/14 bouys to McClouth Steel. #9 Firetiger and #9 Blue/Silver on the 20 and 6 foot leads did the trick. Only caught a handful of silvers. Water temp 56 degrees.
Dad came down to visit so we gave it a shot last night (5/21) in the same area but with different results. Silvers never shut down after dark, well sort of. Instead of getting doubles and triples while the sun was out we only caught one at a time after dark. Only managed 3 walleyes, two of which I released because they were too small. They were both around 15 inches but very skinny. #11 Firetiger and #9 Clown. Water temp 58 degrees.
May give Amherstburg a shot bright and early Monday morning.

Took my daughter Alex out handlining this morning over in the Amherstburg Channel. We picked up two, lost one and released two others at the Hole-in-the-Wall.

We drifted down to the C.C.G. where we picked up one more.

Lots of Silver Bass, water was 62 degrees, a little stained with a few weeds floating down. We fished from 7:30 am to 10:00 am. Four of the walleyes came on a black spoon and the other on a #9 Blue Mackeral Rapala.

| Went back over to Amherstburg this morning to pull some wire. Started out at the Hole-in-the-Wall where I picked up two. Moved upstream and started fishing at the 74 bouy in 30 to 34 feet of water. By the time I passed the 76 bouy I picked up the rest of my limit and threw back 7 more for a total of 13 walleyes. Most were just over 15 inches and 4 in the 11 to 14 inch range. Largest fish was 20 inches long. First two fish came on a Riley Special spoon. The other 11 all came on a #254 "Corn" Denny Spoon on the 20 foot lead. Best part of the whole morning was only 5 Silver Bass. Fished from 7:00 am to 10:30 am. and surface temp was 68 degrees.

Went back over to the Amherstburg Channel Saturday (6/27), picked up another limit and released seven. One fish was 17 inches long, the other 12 were all 15 inch "cookie cutter" walleyes. Water temp was 71 degrees and clear except for the weeds. One minute the river would be clear and before you knew it you would need a bush hog to get through all the weeds and mayfly casings. The spoons in the picture caught all the fish the last two trips with the one on the left catching the majority of them.
