Does anyone here have the NEXUS card? I go by boat into Canadian waters a lot for perch fishing, and need either an I-68 or a NEXUS card in order to be able to check in with customs by phone (instead of in person) on my way back. I've had the I-68 in the past, but am thinking of switching to the NEXUS because:
  1. It's cheaper, $50 for five years instead of $30 for one year
  2. It allows you to get a NEXPRESS card, which supposedly gives you access to an express lane through customs when coming back by car. This may come in handy during Wheatley steelhead season
  3. You can apply by mail instead of driving to Immigration offices
The only downside appears to be a 5-6 week wait for the paperwork to be processed, as opposed to getting an I-68 immediately.

Dave,

In order to take advantage of the NEXUS card or an I68  everyone that is crossing the boarder with you will need one.  If you have a NEXUS and your fishing partner does not you still have to report in-person.

If you cross the boarder solo or have friends that are willing to also get a NEXUS or I68 it may not be a bad thing to get.

Other than that IMHO, it is a waste of money.

I like what the new law says regarding NEXUS:

"Bear in mind that a NEXUS card is an alternative to a passport, and ensuring that you have either a NEXUS card or a passport will enable you to continue to utilize telephonic clearance procedures currently in place for I-68 holders."

Like goosewa said, the biggest hitch is that everyone on your boat needs to have one. The guy I usually perch fish with has also applied for one, so we should be all set.

Update on NEXUS. I mailed my application about a month ago. They sent me a letter last week saying that it was approved, and could be picked up via appointment only at their office near the Ambassador Bridge. I went last Friday, showed them by birth certificate, and got my card. I learned a couple of things there about using the card to cross the border by car:

1. They have express lanes for NEXUS card-holders at the bridge and the tunnel, on both the US and Canadian side.

2. They have scanners at these express lanes that will read your NEXUS card, so you can pass through Customs without speaking to an agent. They still reserve the right to stop and inspect any vehicle they want.

The biggest limitation is that everyone in your party needs to have their own card in order to do the phone call-in or use the express lanes.
