so im out fishing last night (long lake) and im catching walleyes left and right, but they are small, so this one walleye 13incher deiced to swallow my hook of my crawler harness. after picnching the barb and trying to work the hook out as gently as possible he starts bleeding all over my hand..... so i tossed him in the cooler.
now yes it was illegal for me to take that fish but he was going to die any way so why not eat him?
the dnr officer said it was ok but i'd like to know what you guys would have done?

| Surprised DNR was ok with that. Unless a DNR officer was around to ask permission, I would have gotten rid of it. Better to waste a fish than to pay a ticket.

| Same here......I would have tossed him back. Just because one says it is okay the next one you talk too might not feel that way.

I agree also. It's natures way. The fish will not go to waste anyway. Some other predator will get a meal. Mark and I had this same discussion last night with a small walleye that swallowed the hook and we knew it was a goner! But he thru it back.

this really works. using your long needle nose plyers, go thru one of the gill openings. make sure you know which way the point of the hook is ( that should be easy to tell if you look at one of your other hooks). with light tension on the main line ( with your mouth or other fisher person) grab the hook at or just below the eyelit and twist the hook back out, even with a barb. it will come out of the throat without harm 95 % of the time or better. if you twist it sideways or the wrong direction the fish will be bleeding shortly.
like others stated about a bleeding fish you can't keep.. throw the fish back and let nature take care of it.
