I was not able to attend the meeting on the handline seminar.   I have a few questions. (1) what type of line and line strength do you use as leaders? (2) do you use different lengths depending upon water clarity, (3) when handlining at night do you use shorter leaders, (4) how can i judge if my lures are riding at or near the bottom, and (5) are crawler harnesses suitable during the summer months?

Lastly, like trolling is there a desired speed for handlining?   I have many more questions but will save those for later.   Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.  Thanks

I would suggest you refer to the DWF website under articles. There are a couple articles that will answer most of your questions. And yes, you can pull harnesses and spinners with crawlers. As far as speed, keep your mainline at approximately 45 degrees to water surface. This will keep you within speed range.

Oops, You asked about line. I use Mason Hardline. Many others just use available mono. I prefer 30 lb but some use 20 or 25 lb.

Too bad you missed the meeting.  I had a few people come up to me afterwards asking me so many questions that I am kicking around the idea of a handlining workshop some afternoon.  I have to check on a few things first.  As for your current questions.....

30 lb test leaders, I use whatever I can find cheap.

I use the same lengths all the time.  40,20,6  Some areas and times of the year I do shorten them up becasue of the lures I use and the area I fish.  Day or night.

If you are getting hung up your leaders are too long.  If you are not getting hung up or catching fish they are too high off the bottom.  It's kind of hard to be more specific here but it is a tril and error thing until you start to catch fish.

Crawler harnesses are fine, just remember to use short harnesses or shorten your leaders.

thanks Mark for the information.   Mark if you have such a workshop I would attend.   Jerry, what is the advantage of the Mason line ?

I well let you know....as for the Mason line there is absolutely no stretch it in at all.  Also, it doesn't tangle up or twist as much as standard mono.

Thanks Mark for the prompt response.   Do you feel that the line stretch is a factor?  I know when jigging with superlines I don't set the hook near as hard as with mono.

My best suggestion would be to buy a small 30 foot spool and give it a shot.  Some people swear by it and won't use anything else.  Others could care less.   I really haven't tried it myself.  It's more important to have your leader lengths and shanks all in tune first.  If that isn't right no matter what kind of leader material or lures you use will make any difference.
