I've done most of my Walleye fishing on the river.  I do plan on making it out to Erie more this year.  How soon does the trolling bite get good?

I THINK it starts to get going good in May.  At least most that I know start then.  Don't see any reason to leave the river in the spring (I like it all year!)

I follow the spawners out of the river, Mid-May and start trolling near the Banana Dyke and around in front of Estral Beach. The wallies seem to stage there and fill themselves on forage fish. Both BB's and Cranks work then. As the weather warms up, just head east until you get tired, lol!

like others mentioned, after the first flights of walleye spawn in the river some move back out into the lake and start to feed.. big time.  the warm waters from fermi ( and alot to do with natural migration)  will help to draw the fish (mainly bait fish) to that whole area.. banana dyke thru brestbay. also the fish that spawn on the reef town near the toledo light will be putting on the feed bag. so bolle's harbour/luna pier are also turning on in mid may.

Productive trolling can be done from Ice out to ice up year in and year out.  My nicest  walleye were caught between April 1 and May 1 last year on the lake.  I hate playing bumper boats on the river anymore.  That time a year on the lake i might not see another boat which is fine with me :).

The Lake can be good as soon as the ice is gone and it is possible to catch some very nice fish. The weather is the biggest factor to deal with and there are lots of days you can not get out, so the river is most often the way to go.

Trolling is the best bet for big suspended fish and slow trolling cranks like the Husky Jerks, Storm Thundersticks, Reef Runners and Rattlen Rogues usually produces. The area around the Toledo light and Maumee Bay is a good starting point. Most boats do very well drifting over reefs and structure in this area while jigging. Jigs or blade baits both catch loads of fish.

You also must be carefull with the weather and water temp, so keeping the boat in good running condition is important. There arent alot of people around to often if you are in a jam

Bret you know jigging the river is your favorite way to fish.

I like this post very much!  It shows just how some of us fish this stretch of water durring those times of year.  I love to fish the river.  Jigging is my favorite.  I just can't get enough when a nice SLOB walter crushes my jig.  On the other hand it is good as well as fun to switch things up a bit.  I love trolling spinners with Bret and some other guys.  There both fun in there own ways.  :)
