It seems like everyone finally got their act together and are all on the same page as far as reporting requirements when fishing in Canadian Waters of Lake Erie, St. Clair and the Detroit River

According to these articles, You do NOT have to check in with Customs unless you actually LAND in Canada and anchoring in Canadian water offshore does NOT count as landing. Tying up to a dock or pulling boat up on shore at Pelee island, etc DOES count as landing and you have to clear Canadian customs as well as U.S Customs upon your return. You still need to have I.D with you and applicable fishing licenses. Passports, etc are NOT needed unless you land. This may or may not be a certainty. I will TRY to reach Canadian officials by phone Monday and see if I can learn anything.

Thanks, Mike.
There is still one thing left unclear for us perch fishermen, and that is whether the Canadian authorities are on board with these decisions. In the past, if you wanted to perch fish on the Canadian side of the river, you had to report into Canadian authorities prior to dropping anchor or risk getting a ticket. This required going to shore in Canada and calling in to their Customs (unless you had a NEXUS card) . If they are still enforcing this, the new clarification for U.S. Border Patrol doesn't help at all, because you can't legally drop anchor in Canada without going ashore first. Once you go ashore to report to Canadian authorities, you'd then be required to report back into U.S. Customs on your return.

I contacted Eric Sharpe when his article came out about that and he said that he checked with Canadian Customs and he was told that anchoring did not constitute entry into Canada.
I told him that we had a different interpretation and he said he would check further and get back to me. I will post as soon as I hear

| OPP said we could call in on a cell...tried and customs said we had to go to a port and call in on a land line....I don't think this system is perfected .....but they are willing to write you a summons and take VISA payment on the spot....ask me how I know...???
