My wife Deanna and our two sons Mike (age 15) and Chris (age 12) stayed at the Totomenai fishing lodge in Wawa, Canada the week of August 2nd. It is approximately 137 miles Northwest of Sault Ste Marie, Canada. On Wednesday evening, August 6th, we were fishing at the "sunken dam" on the Michipicoten River which connects the Whitefish and Manitowik lakes. We got to the sunken dam" at approximately 6:30 pm. When we got there, we ended up underneath a passing rainstorm for almost 10 minutes. At about 7:00 pm, Mike hooked and brought a 26" Walleye to the boat. The fish was able to swim through a hole in the net which I had not noticed before - shame on me!
15 minutes later, Chris - with the help of his brother Mike - caught this 28.5", 9lb walleye:

According to the lodge owner Frank, this walleye ties the record for largest walleye caught on the lake system for the summer! We're going to get a replica made.
Have a great day,
David Roussey

Nice catch for your son Dave. I go to Totomenai Lodge every year in June (5 years). I love that place. The sunken dam is a great place to fish in the evening. I don't know what kind of boat you had there but most of the best fishing is a fair distance from the lodge. We used up over 140 gallons of gas this year in my Ranger. This year we brought home limits of Walleye, Lake Trout, Pike and brought home some bonus White Fish as well but none of our Walleye were near that size.

Thank you very much for the kind words. We used one of the lodge's 18' boats with a 25 hp Yamaha. We limited ourselves to the Whitefish lake and Michipicoten river. On Monday, we used a guide and he took us all the way to the Northeast end of Manitowik lake. The boys loved it. Most people only hear about eating your catch on the shore. They actually had a chance to live it:

At the sunken dam, Mike hooked his 26" on a crawler harness and Chris got "Walter" on a leech and hook led by a splitshot.
I am extremely impressed with how you did and would ask if you could share with us, where you caught Walleye, Lake Trout, Pike, White Fish (I have a map) and how you were set up to catch them?
Thank you again,
- David

| Now that's living!! I took a trip up to the Boundary Waters Wilderness area years ago and that pic brings back memories. Doesn't get any better than that!

| Most of the Walleye we kept were caught at or just outside of Big Stoney falls all the way at the end of the system. Overall they tend to be bigger there. The Pike were all caught in the Hawk River. You need to have overcast conditions when your fishing for Pike up there or you might as well do something else. The Lake Trout were all caught verticle jigging on Manatowik Lake in the area they call Red Rock in 60 - 70 feet of water. That's where the White Fish were caught too. If the guide (was it Roley or Don?) showed you where Little Stoney Falls was that is a great place for the kids to cast and catch lots of SM Bass. If you are planning on attending the next DWF meeting bring your map and I'll gladly point out some hot spots for you. By the way the Lake Trout in my avitar was caught at Totomenai Lodge. Wally,
This is fantastic - thank you very much! I will show the boys and we will go over the map tonight. It will get them excited for next year as well.
I will plan to be at the next meeting and look for you there.
Great avatar - that's where mine came from too. We took our black lab Ruby. She lives for water retrieves. Needless to say, she loved Totomenai as well.
Almost forgot, The guide we used was Don (Frank's brother):

The boy in the pic is my older son, Mike. They both enjoyed him a lot!
